Disputes about who would win in a fight between martial arts legend, Bruce Lee, and martial arts master Chuck Norris, have raged since Lee's premature death “on July 20, 1973” (Singh). Both Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris had gained notoriety at the time of Lee's untimely death. Admittedly, both Lee and Norris were, and are, the premier martial artists of their time, Norris claims they never actually fought, but only, “worked out together, and filmed a movie fight scene together, but never fought each other to determine a winner” (Eisenhart). Actor and martial artist Bob Wall knew, and starred in movies with both Lee and Norris, two with Lee, three with Norris, and one with both Lee and Norris. According to Kabir Bhandari, in his article Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris fought against this man. He lives to tell the tale, the two movies Wall starred in with Lee were, Enter the Dragon (1973) and Game of Death (1978), the three movies he starred in with Norris were, Code of Silence (1985), Firewalker (1986) and Hero and the Terror (1988), and the one with both Lee and Norris was, Way of the Dragon (1972), (Bhandari). Also, the research didn't uncover any disparaging comments from Norris about Lee, or the other way around. In fact, further research didn't turn up any derogatory comments about Norris by Lee's widow Linda, his now deceased son Brandon, or his daughter Shannon. Were Norris and Lee friends? Did they ever fight to determine a winner? If they had fought, who would have won? Here are two men, with different techniques, disciplines, and strengths, one is a martial arts seven time world champion, and the other died in 1973; when Norris was asked who would win in a fight between the two of them, he stateded simply, "Bruce didn't want to go there, and I didn't want to go there" (Eisenhart). There have always been accusations that Bruce Lee wasn't a real martial artist. Bob Wall expressed in an interview with the online magazine City on Fire that while on the set of the movie Enter the Dragon, there was someone who challenged Lee by claiming, “you’re not a martial artist, you’re just an actor.” Wall observed that Lee told the guy, “come on down and show me what you got.” Wall noted that when the guy got down there, “Bruce was just playing around with him and the guy was trying to take his head off.” Wall concluded with, “Bruce just then kicks the **** out of him” (City on Fire). It can be pointed out, that Chuck Norris, a man “who had- at the point at which Lee and he met- only focused on Tae Kwon Do/Karate with a small sideline in Judo.” The same article declared “it’s hard to argue that either man was really a 'competitive fighter.' Both were predominantly performers. But Bruce Lee came closer to this than Norris” (Without Writing). According to IMDb, Norris was a seven time world martial arts champion who “retired as undefeated Professional Full-Contact Middleweight Champion in 1974” (imdb). Norris stated that “Bruce Lee learned from everybody. He had a very open mind. He never believed in only one martial arts style or that one was superior” (Satter). The question still remains, who would have won in a fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris? Ethan Wolff-Mann of Thrillist wrote it best with the conclusion of his article WAS BRUCE LEE ACTUALLY GOOD AT FIGHTING?, when he quipped, “too bad we never got to find out. RIP Bruce.” (Thrillist).
